The annual Perseid meteor shower is set to light up the skies once again this August, offering one of the year's most spectacular natural displays. Known in Poland as Noc Perseidów, the event attracts thousands of stargazers hoping to witness dozens of shooting stars every hour.
This year's peak is expected on the night of 12 to 13 August, with exceptionally favourable viewing conditions thanks to the new Moon, which will leave the skies darker than usual.
What Are the Perseids?
The Perseids occur when Earth passes through debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. As tiny particles enter Earth's atmosphere, they burn brightly, producing the familiar streaks of light that appear to race across the night sky.
The shower is active throughout July and August, but the greatest activity occurs during its annual peak, when up to 100 meteors per hour may be visible under ideal conditions.
The Best Places to Watch Near Warsaw
Kampinos National Park
Just west of the capital, Kampinos National Park is one of the most accessible dark-sky locations for Warsaw residents. Open meadows and forest clearings provide far darker conditions than the city centre.
Zegrze Reservoir
The shoreline around Zegrze offers wide, unobstructed views of the sky. Choosing a quieter location away from marinas and holiday resorts will improve visibility.
Celestynów and Masovian Countryside
The rural landscapes south-east of Warsaw offer significantly less light pollution and are popular with amateur astronomers during major celestial events.
Kozienice Forest
Around an hour south of Warsaw, Kozienice Forest combines expansive woodland with open clearings that provide excellent night sky viewing.
Making the Most of the Experience
The best viewing begins after 11.00 pm, with meteor activity increasing after midnight.
